Juicy Air Fryer Whole Chicken – Roast Chicken Made Simple

Juicy air fryer whole chicken with crispy skin and tender meat made with simple ingredients and minimal prep. An easy air fryer roast chicken recipe perfect for busy weeknights and flavorful leftovers.

If you’ve been searching for the easiest way to get crispy skin and juicy, flavorful chicken at home, this recipe for air fryer whole chicken is the one. Forget store-bought rotisserie chickens, making your own at home is simple, budget-friendly, and tastes even better.

When I discovered you could roast an entire chicken in the air fryer, it changed the way I cook family dinners. The air fryer locks in moisture while crisping up the skin beautifully, giving you tender and juicy meat in under an hour. With just olive oil, salt, and pepper, this method proves you don’t need a long ingredient list to make something that feels gourmet. This recipe is also beginner-friendly and a great way to build kitchen confidence.

This juicy air fryer whole chicken is also perfect for meal prep. I love using the shredded chicken in my loaded buffalo chicken sweet potatoes recipe. The tender meat soaks up the buffalo sauce and makes a hearty, protein-packed dinner. The best part? This chicken keeps on giving. Use the drippings for a quick gravy or crispy roasted potatoes, save the bones for nourishing homemade bone broth, and enjoy the leftover meat in salads, soups, tacos, or sandwiches. One bird, multiple meals, and nothing wasted.

Course: Basics, Chicken, Dinner
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, giblets removed (about 3-4 lbs)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Notes

  • Crispier skin tip: Pat the chicken as dry as possible before seasoning.
  • Flavor boost: Add garlic powder, paprika, or Italian seasoning to the rub.
  • Don’t waste the drippings: Use them for gravy or roasted veggies.
  • Save the bones: Make a rich, collagen-packed homemade bone broth.
  • Meal prep ready: Shred leftovers for salads, soups, wraps, or enchiladas.

Method

  1. Remove the chicken from its packaging. Take out any giblets or extra liquid from the cavity, then use paper towels to pat the chicken completely dry. This helps the skin crisp up.
  2. Drizzle the olive oil over the chicken. Sprinkle the salt and pepper evenly on all sides. Use your hands to rub the seasoning in so the entire chicken is coated.
  3. Place the chicken breast-side up on the cutting board. Gently press down on the breast until it flattens slightly. This helps the bird cook more evenly in the air fryer.
  4. Put the chicken in the air fryer basket breast-side down. Cook at 400°F for 30 minutes. Starting breast-side down allows the juices to flow into the breast meat so it stays moist.
  5. After the first cook time, use tongs to carefully flip the chicken so the breast side is facing up. Return the chicken to the air fryer and cook for another 20–30 minutes, depending on how large it is.
  6. Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer by inserting it into the thickest part of the breast (without touching the bone). When it reads 160°F, the chicken is done.
  7. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board. Tent loosely with foil and let it rest for at least 15 minutes. This final rest brings the temperature up to 165°F and allows the juices to redistribute, so the meat stays tender when you carve it.
