Whenever we have burger night, I almost always make a big batch of oven-baked sweet potato fries. They’re one of those sides that feels homemade and comforting, yet they’re simple enough to throw together on a weeknight. I’ve tried a lot of different methods—air fryer, double bake, soaking—but this is the easiest version I keep coming back to.

It only takes a few basic ingredients and one sheet pan, and the fries turn out tender on the inside with just the right amount of crisp on the edges. Perfect for dipping, sharing, or sneaking a few before dinner makes it to the table.

There are so many different ways you could prepare sweet potato fries, but this is the simplest and most basic method I use that doesn’t require any special tools or appliances. The sweet potatoes turn out tender with a bit of crispy crunch. We love serving this on burger nights!

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries

First, peel and chop 3 medium sweet potatoes. Cut them into ¼-inch thick fries or wedges. I’m not too picky about the shape—as long as they’re not too thick.

Then, toss them in a bowl with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of salt, and ½ tablespoon of starch, such as cornstarch, tapioca starch, or arrowroot starch. This helps add a little extra crispiness to the fries as they bake. Arrowroot starch is my favorite to use for this purpose.

Toss to coat, then lay them flat on a parchment-lined large baking sheet, making sure they’re spread out evenly.

Bake on the middle rack at 415°F for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

To finish, broil the fries for the last few minutes until you reach your desired level of crispiness. Make sure to stay close and keep an eye on them while the broiler is on!

Sweet Potato Fries: Serving Ideas

We love these on burger nights or alongside chicken nuggets or pulled BBQ chicken. They’re also great with simple dips like chipotle mayo, garlic aioli, or honey mustard. These are kid friendly and get gobbled up pretty quickly!

Tips

  • The key to crisp fries is spacing them out—use two pans if needed, however I usually use one large sheet pan like this one.
  • For extra flavor, try sprinkling a little smoked paprika or garlic powder before baking.

Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries

A simple and quick way to make perfect and crispy sweet potato fries in your oven!
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Servings: 6
Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes cut into ¼-inch thick fries
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon arrowroot starch
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon garlic powder and ½ teaspoon paprika for extra flavor

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 415°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into even ¼-inch fries. The more uniform they are, the better they’ll cook.
  3. Toss the fries in a large bowl with olive oil, salt, starch, and any optional seasonings until evenly coated. The starch helps create that light, crisp texture on the outside.
  4. Spread them out evenly on the baking sheet in a single layer—avoid overcrowding so they roast instead of steam.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  6. Finish under the broiler for a few minutes until the fries reach the level of crispiness you like. Keep a close eye on them during this step so they don’t burn.
  7. Serve warm with burgers, grilled chicken, or your favorite dipping sauce!
