Healthy Homemade Fruit Snacks with Real Fruit: A Kid-Friendly Treat

These Healthy Homemade Fruit Snacks with Real Fruit are a lunchbox hit that kids love. Designed to look and taste like store-bought gummies, they’re made with fresh fruits and vegetables instead of artificial dyes or hard-to-pronounce ingredients. This makes them a nutritious alternative that doesn’t skimp on flavor. Plus, it’s a fun project to do with your kids, from blending the fruit to picking out playful shapes.

Shaping the gummies is half the fun. We went with hearts, bears, rings, and even tried some dinosaur shapes. My kids loved naming them, coming up with “Wild Berry Hearts” and “T-Rex Tarts” as their favorites. What shapes and names will your family create?

Supplies Needed

To make these gummies, you’ll need a few basic kitchen tools and ingredients. Adjust quantities based on the specific recipe you’re following:

Whisk and Dropper: For mixing and filling molds.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Such as berries, apples, or carrots, depending on the flavor (about 1-2 cups per batch).

Juice: Fruit juice for blending (¼ cup per batch, plus extra if needed).

Lemon Juice: For brightness (3 tablespoons per batch).

Gelatin: Unflavored gelatin powder; I recommend this brand (2-3 tablespoons per batch).

High-Powered Blender: Essential for smooth purees; I use [this model](insert affiliate link).

Silicone Gummy Molds: Flexible molds for easy release; I like these.

Small Saucepan: For warming the mixture.

Step-by-Step Process

Making these gummies is straightforward and quick—perfect for involving the kids. Here’s a general guide that applies to all flavors; specific ingredient amounts are in the recipes below.

1. Prepare the Fruit Puree: Wash and chop your chosen fruits and vegetables. Place them in the blender with ¼ cup of juice and 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Blend on high until smooth, adding a bit more juice if needed for consistency.

2. Warm the Mixture: Pour the puree into a small saucepan and heat over low-medium heat until warm (do not boil). This helps the gelatin dissolve properly.

3. Add the Gelatin: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Gradually whisk in the gelatin powder until fully dissolved. Work steadily to avoid lumps.

4. Fill the Molds: Using a dropper or small spoon, quickly fill your silicone molds with the mixture before it starts to cool and set. Tap the molds gently to release any air bubbles.

5. Chill and Set: Place the filled molds in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours, or until the gummies are firm. Once set, pop them out of the molds and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Tips for Success

  • Flavor Experimentation: Mix and match fruits and juices for custom gummies, but avoid pineapple or kiwi—their enzymes prevent the gelatin from setting.
  • Temperature Control: Keep the mixture warm but never boiling when adding gelatin to maintain the chewy texture.
  • Speed Matters: Fill molds promptly to prevent premature setting.
